Death of a generation
by onacruse interry's thread http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/7/127651/1.ashx got me to thinking about this.. one of the characteristics of the wts is to "weather the storm" of a major disappointment, and, as evidenced by the last two major cycles, count on the death (as much in a literal sense as a figurative one) of the generation of jws that went through that debacle...and thence to recommence with the eschatological emphasis as if nothing had happened.. the post-1925 period is perhaps even more exemplative of this than the post-1914 period, because a good many bible students, grasping at every straw to salvage their belief system, swallowed the chronological recalculations and jubilee-cycle antitype interpretations, which extended 1914 to 1925. but 1925 was the last straw for most of them.
it initiated a major revolt among the rank-and-file (and especially the elders...the leaders of "that generation") which haunted the wts for the next 20 years, and a chronological review of the watchtower articles and books during the entire rutherford period shows a preoccupation with vilifying those who dared to remind of that debacle.. with the 50s came a major expansion in the wts, and a consequent dilution of that disillusioned group.
those that were still alive, and who were still jws, had by that time invested so much of their lives into that way of life that...well, how could they find the muster to dump off 40 years of life energy and say, finally, "well, i was wrong, wasn't i?

I grew up not fearing old age
by Sour Grapes inas a teenage jw, i grew up believing that i was not going to finish high school nor would i get old and have to die like my grandparents did.
well, i did finish high school, as did my children and my grandchildren and old age has not been kind to me.
i don't like to look at pictures from 40 years ago, from a time when i was healthy and i had the goal of "stay alive till 75.

So many great comments.
So many believed 100% that what was told to us was 100% 24k Solid Gold God's Truth...we wouid not grow old.. But the TTATT is that they sold us gold plastic junk. Just like any sleazy business. They abuse their employees, us. If we don't like it, leave. We have to understand, leaving WTB&T$, is a GOOD thing. There never was any benefit package. We never even got an xmas turkey, lol!
As a fader, I can't believe, what I used to believe. (shaking head) Yikes. There are so many honest hearted good "worldly" people out there/here. Educated. Enlightened. Normal.
Most of my life is over, yet because I just recently (not yet 8 mos.) learned TTATT, I am finding I can relax, as in I/you am not blood guilty over anything. What a terrible lie to hold over volunteer heads. I lived with a lifetime of guilt. I didn't feel like ALL the time witnessing to people. I didn't like going to the Hall early to listen to the sisters discuss/gossip what each one was wearing. geesz! I didn't want to have to go and smile and welcome new people. I had never planned out my future, I wasn't suppose to make it to 6th grade, 8th grade, high school. I am now retired. I had never planned on that. Thankfully, my husband was a professional, who paid into a retirement fund. Where we lived in about 1974/5 the gov't was offering to let you opt out of paying into retirement funds every month, if you so wished. They offered to give you in one lump sum what you had already paid in. I know 2 bros who agreed to this. Not a happy story.
I think about now, that I will grow old. Silly, that it is a new thought.
On facebook, I see what fulfilling lives, so many of my classmates have had. We are told not to go to our high school reunions. Is that because we will be embaressed? JW's are odd. I always made a point to let everyone know I was a jw. Not anymore. I have moved and am starting over. Why should I tell people I was brain washed, so stayed in a useless cult, for almost all my life? I am not an a$$hole, so I am keeping my mouth shut!

I to have a missing but NEVER found family member, very painful indeed! RIP Whitney!

i feel for the family of this young woman and any way you slice it, closure or no closure, it is the same.
i will however say that the said missing person had just went through a disfellowshipping and divorce, and there was a dispute over property.

I have so much compassion for you. Your life has been so hard and you have shown so much strength. You know so many of us are quite in awe of you. You have lived a life of dignity, inspite of all of your burdens. My words are just words but the love and respect I have for you, is very real. If you went, I would miss you, and I don't want to miss you, I and everyone else on JW.net, want you continally in our lives, on this board, handing out advise, for the Newbes and the Oldies, for tomorrow and the day after, and the day after that. Don't leave.
I had noticed you didn't post for a while. Then, recently, you showed us the beautiful purses you custom design and sell. How is that working out for you? Do you have a website where people can contact you for possible purchases? My self, I am not looking to buy anything. I just moved and have down sized but others might be interested.
Lady Lee. You are a beautiful, talented, intelligent woman. A Tower of Strength to yourself and others. You have opened the door of your mind and heart to us, with your stories and poems, and now telling us how you are getting strength from educated Professionals in your time of darkness. Kudos to you. I was mentioning Oompa to my daughter just this morning and how his tragic death has affected me. She told me when she was in grade 10, her teacher asked if anyone knew anyone who had committed suicide. She said yes. She knew of 11. The teacher took it as though that was unusual. In our little corner of the world, my daughter only knows JW's. Not unusual where we're coming from.

Long time Lurker, ready to join in...

i was in the religion for 25 years, out now for 8, along with my husband, daughter, and son!
i would have to say pretty much the whole time i was in i didnt want to be, pretty much "dreaded" all aspects of it, meetings, service, assemblies, and talks, i hated talks, man o man would i be grouchy the whole week i had a scheduled talk.. we didnt have much family in, but lots of friends and many jw employees, pretty much lost all that, down to just one jw employee left(thats a good thing).

Blackbird, thank you, for bringing up about the abuse at the KH with the parents, beating up on their little kids. JW kool - aid drinkers are told they should, worship as a family and that means, spending the money to dress up their little kids, and parade them around, excuse me, take them with you to meetings and FS. When the little child is tired and needs to go to bed, he is instead at the KH and gets paddled or smacked down in the bathroom or outdoors for just being what he/she is. A little kid that needs his mommy and daddy to start being normal parents and put him/her to bed, at home, in a quiet, cozy, room, depending on age 6:30 - 7PM - 7:30 - 8PM 8:30 - 9PM. Not a big, light filled Hall with 100 people in it, talking, singing, clapping hands. When the child is tucked into bed, the parents then have quiet time for themselves to create a better marriage, even have happy sex that is right for them without WBT$ telling them what is right and what is wrong and all in the family get their normal rest to wake up in the morning, refreshed and happy. Everyone is naturally happy, relaxed and refreashed. No one got yelled at. Age approperiate bedtimes. No guilt feelings from the adults. Normal people don't have to pretend they are happy. Many JW's do.

Their impression of who is "good association" and their version of everyone else that is "bad association".
Dedicated Doctors and Nurses and Therapists, who spend years in training and are truly helpful and needed are looked down upon, as "wasting their time" in "this system" because they spent their youth getting an education, not serving Jehovah via the WBT$ Publishing Book Store.
In the WBT$ estimation, the unreplaceable, educated Professionals ONLY got an education, for the "monetary" benefits, not because they truly want to help their fellow man. They are considered "worldly" and "materialistic".
JW's are in their estimation, the ONLY ones who care/love their fellow man. "Pioneers", (I wonder how long it will take before they get rid of that covered - wagon image) as it were, have "greased heads" of approval. We are suppose to be so PROUD of THEM, wasting their time, giving up the BEST YEARS of THEIR LIFE, finding and bringing in the poor Innocents still out there, that don't realize, until its too late, what they are getting involved with, IF they ever do wake up.
"Our Warm Christian Love" gag, barf.
Armageddon is "just around the corner".

I am so sorry, you were the one to find your Friend dead. And you say your cousin Judy just died, and other Friends and Relatives also? That is a ton of grief to process. It makes it even harder that you just got out of the Hospital yourself.
I am sending you continual internet hugs, chicken soup and whatever else you need to get thru this depressing time.

My brother died tonight
by poppers injust got word that my youngest brother died of pancreatic cancer.
he was diagnosed in early august.
this has been really tough for me and my family..

Since he was diagnosed in August, were you able to have some quality time with each other? Talk about your good old days, growing up together. Brothers doing goofy things, joking around? Were you able to get to a spot to say your good byes?
I will be thinking about you and your Family at this very difficult time.
